The expression “Massi téladi” is definitely not French; it is Bamanankan, one of the national languages of Mali; a land-locked sub-Saharan country in West Africa, once a French colony. It would appear looking at the lyrics of the song, by Amadou Bagayoko & Mariam Doumbia, most of which I have been able to translate into English. The phrase (“Massi téladi”) in relation to the lyrics, seems to point to the possibility that it could, and this is a stab in the dark because it makes sense because of the relationship, mean “unlucky” – it seems to fit. Unless we have somebody in this community who reads, writes and speaks Bamanankan then we will not get a definitive answer.

Note: The original lyrics were written bi-lingual, part French, part Bamanankan

Sorry – best I can do.
